The Artist

I’m Malte, a photographer based in Canberra, Australia. I photograph cities — street, documentary and architecture — drawn to the geometry, light and shadow that structure a scene as much as any subject within it. Some images hold a direct, confrontational moment; others resolve into near-abstraction, where form and structure take over from narrative.

My pictures are found, not staged. Most come from patience, persistence and a fair amount of luck. The reflections and double exposures in my work happen in the camera, not in the computer; afterwards, I largely limit myself to tonal work, cropping and the occasional removal of a distraction.

The Image Creation Process

How Do You Approach Image Creation?

My strong preference is to get as much right in camera as possible — composition, light, moment. Post-production is part of the process, but it is not where images are made. Part of this approach is to constrain the image creation process — constraints are a good thing. Without those constraints anything becomes possible and it becomes impossible to determine how far to take an edit and where to stop.

I keep this simple, because I collect very little. Blunt Angle is a one-person
photography practice run by me, Malte Stien, from Canberra, Australia. I only ask for
the information I actually need to reply to you or to send you a print, and I
never sell it or share it for advertising.

This page explains what that means in practice. If anything here is unclear,
please get in touch — I’m happy to answer.
